The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: The Effects of Marijuana

This presentation offers a well-rounded look at cannabis, moving beyond a simple "good vs. bad" framing to explore the plant in its full complexity. Participants begin with the basics of the cannabis plant itself, then learn to distinguish between its key components (THC, CBD, and hemp) along with their legal classifications and distinct effects on the body and mind.

From there, the presentation examines both sides of use: documented benefits alongside risks and withdrawal symptoms. Special attention was given to how these risks intensify in adolescent users.

It also addresses a growing public health concern in North Carolina: contamination of the unregulated marijuana supply with substances like fentanyl and crack cocaine, and the well documented link between heavy THC use and increased risk of schizophrenia, particularly among young users. This section helps participants separate confirmed contamination cases from unverified media reports.

Rounding out the discussion, the presentation explores the plant's cultural and spiritual history across traditions like Rastafarianism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Indigenous practices, along with its complicated, racially-charged legal history in the U.S.
